Do I need home and contents insurance?

If you rent or own a property, we recommend you have the best house and contents insurance to suit your needs.

Case study

During the 2022 Northern New South Wales floods, Michael’s family home and its contents were severely damaged by floodwaters. Fortunately, Michael had taken out house and contents insurance.

His policy included automatic cover for flood, so it covered the costs of repairing the damage to the walls and floors of his home caused by floodwaters.

It also covered the cost of replacing his furniture and white goods. And, because he and his two children had to move out while his home was being repaired, his policy took care of the costs of living in rental accommodation during this time.

Tips or other things to know about home and contents insurance

Each house and contents insurance policy is different, but generally you won’t be covered:

  • If your home is unoccupied for more than 100 continuous days (90 days for the listed event and base listed event wordings)
  • For rust, corrosion, gradual deterioration, depreciation or wear and tear
  • For damage caused by rats, mice, or insects

There are other exclusions which our insurance brokers can outline for you. A deductible/excess may apply.

Consider accidental damage cover

Most contents insurance doesn’t include cover for accidental damage. It may be worth adding this if you want cover for mishaps, such as staining your couch or smashing a valuable artwork.

Our brokers will be able to provide you with the best contents insurance quote that includes accidental damage cover and find the best home and contents insurance to suit your needs.

Check limits for certain items

Most policies have maximum amounts on how much you claim for certain items. For example, a limit for individual electrical appliances.

Our brokers can help tailor a home and contents insurance quote to ensure you are adequately covered.

You don’t need to own your home to have contents insurance

Across Australia, many people rent rather than own. Renting can be a great opportunity to focus on what’s important to you, instead of worrying about building repairs or mortgage payments.

Contents insurance for renters covers the same things that home and contents insurance covers, so you can protect just the things that matter to you including your furniture, TV, computer and more, without paying for building cover that you don’t need.

Our brokers can tailor a contents insurance for renters policy which suits your individual needs. They’ll provide you with what is and isn’t covered under a contents insurance for renters policy, as well as some optional covers you can buy.
