International Women’s Day 2023: Interview with Tiarne Hutchison
International Women’s Day (IWD) on March 8 is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality.
IWD 2023 is an ideal time for us to highlight the incredible female talent working in the insurance business at NewSure. It’s an opportunity to increase the awareness of women’s roles in a traditionally male-dominated industry, and to highlight the expertise and passion these women bring to our business each and every day.
In this series we discover why these women chose a career in insurance, and why more young women should choose a career path in insurance. In this interview, we talk to Tiarne Hutchison, Broker Assistant.

Tell us a little about your background. Why did you decide upon a career in insurance?
I started in the insurance industry almost 15 years ago in an administration role. It was a great way to learn the insurance business and get experience in the claims process, operations, and finance management. It was a steep learning curve, but also a lot of fun! You learn a lot very quickly, including the importance of what we do for customers.
When I knew I wanted to have a career in insurance I went back to study and improve my qualifications in management and insurance.
In 2020, we merged with NewSure, and I haven’t looked back.
What did you dream of becoming when you were younger?
With a passion for helping young children learn, I wanted to become a teacher.
Which innovative woman do you admire the most and why?
Jacinda Ardern is one of the most inspiring women on my radar – as a career woman and a mother.
I also believe more work can be done to ensure the industry is as diverse as our customer base. While more than half the finance and insurance workforce are women, the gender pay gap still exists.
How do you believe NewSure supports women?
Definitely through flexible working and training. Our industry is and needs to continually evolve to meet our customers’ expectations and it’s a constant challenge to keep on top of these changes. As a business, we believe in continual learning and imparting this knowledge to our customers.
What do you think the insurance industry needs to do to attract more women and create more of a gender-equal future?
Women are just as likely as men to want to be promoted and aspire to senior-level roles. In insurance, we need to get better at celebrating female leaders to ensure more women see a future for themselves in insurance.

What’s advice you’d give to the women of the future/women who are looking to join the insurance industry?
Be confident in decisions and allow yourself to make mistakes along the way. What we do is important, and in any role in the business, you can make a positive difference to customers and communities.
